It was the location and the land that proved to be the biggest selling points when we came across this house twenty years ago, says Mike. Its positioned right on the edge of the city, so in one direction we have all the shops and amenities you could possibly wish for and in the other theres noting but mile upon mile of open countryside. Its a phrase thats often overused but here we really have been able to enjoy the best of both worlds.
The house was built in the late 1920s and the adjoining cottage was added on at some point in the 1960s, but when we came here both were a little tired and in need of a fair bit of tlc. Over time weve worked with what we have here and sympathetically refurbished the entire property and its been a really fantastic family home. In fact its perfect for day-to-day life and because of the layout its also a brilliant party house. The huge living room opens into the open-plan kitchen and that in turn leads out onto the garden, so theres a really nice flow. Weve been extremely happy here.
The house is just lovely, but its the outside space that Id say Ive enjoyed most, and its been amazing for the children, continues Mike. We have open lawns, lots of trees, a childrens play area and a huge paddock, and there are lots of lovely places to sit out, relax and entertain. The children would spend hours out there when they were young building treehouses and dens, and wed put hay bales around the bottoms of the trees to create seating and then invite friends and family to our big BBQs or hog roasts Its a place that has given us all a really incredible lifestyle and well take with us some fantastic memories.
Favourite Room: On the back of the house we have a huge kitchen and living space and its where we tend to spend an awful lot of our time, says Mike. Its a really sociable part of the house and it has a lovely view of the garden and paddock beyond.
Favourite aspect of the grounds or surrounding area: This is a real hidden gem, says Mike. Behind the house we have acres of private grounds, so you can stroll out there and literally feel in the middle of nowhere, and yet I can hop in the car and be in the city centre in next to no time. Its totally unique in that respect.
Memorable event (if not another favourite room or unique feature): The Cottage is a one-bedroom dwelling thats attached to the house but can be totally self-contained, says Mike. We rent it out but it could be ideal as a granny annex.
What theyll miss most / why they are leaving: I know Im never going to find another place quite like this one and its going to be a real wrench to leave, says Mike, but the children have left home and so its time to downsize and let someone else enjoy all that this amazing place has to offer.
